When Amy saw Rick, she froze for a moment. Then knowing that the sudden stillness would only draw attention to her, she continued to do her assigned work, snapping in magazines and detaching them from the weapons she held.

Still, her thoughts fragmented as she performed the automatic actions. What was Rick doing here? He wasn’t a hunter. Could he be looking for a pistol to defend the home that he now shared with Nancy, to protect his new family? If so, why didn’t he go to a sporting goods store or a gun shop?

And why was he wearing those clothes? They weren’t like Rick at all. It almost seemed as though he were in disguise…

Then she realized that was exactly the situation. He was disguised—just as she was. They were both hunting, acting as bait for the predators that they wanted to make their prey. He also had come here to find those responsible for the bombing.

But things were different with Rick, she thought. He wasn’t a hunter, he wasn’t up to this. He had never wet his hands with human blood. She had. It was why she was here, why the Crow had brought her back, and no harm could come to her.

It wasn’t the same for Rick. Amy knew what these people were capable of. They had shot Wilson Barnes, and the man she had killed in the garage had gutted William Standish like a pig. Even the old woman had been potentially deadly. They wouldn’t hesitate to kill Rick in a minute if they thought that he endangered them.

And her shock at seeing him was further intensified by their confrontation through the window the other morning. What would he think if he saw her now?

But he wasn’t looking in her direction or at any of the half-clad women scattered here and there in the booths. That was like him, she thought, and smiled. He had always had an embarrassingly puritanical streak. He passed Arnie’s booth without a glance at her, his eyes remaining on the guns on the table, and moved down the aisle, toward the front of the room.

“Like lockin’ and loadin’, sweetie?” said a tall, rangy man who was staring at her chest. “Or was that smile for me?”

“That smile,” she said, “is for anyone who purchases a new weapon from Arnie’s Arms, sir.”

“Fat chance,” said the man. “Got my own stand down there. But I don’t have any pussy to look at.” He laughed and smacked his buddy on the shoulder. Then with one more appraising look at Amy, who felt naked under his eyes, he headed back toward his stand.

It was an oppressive morning of being eyed and ogled. Never before had she felt like such a piece of meat, hung up for all the wolves to admire. The feminine draw worked, however, for Arnie was doing a good business, steadily selling ammo and guns and filling out the endless array of government forms that were required with each purchase.

And while
